We encourage you to provide a brief narrative or tribute about your loved one and your quilt square. We are unable to identify all of the quilt squares by name. If you see your loved one's quilt square on the website, but it is not identified by name, please sign the release form and let us know which quilt square is theirs.

The Intermountain Donor Services Donor Quilt is dedicated to the memory of all those who have given the gift of life through organ, eye, or tissue donation. The quilt was started in 1997 by donor mom Judy Hunter in honor of her daughter, Katy.

Families are invited to honor their loved one by creating a quilt square in their memory. Each memorial square of the quilt represents a life and tells a story. Every spring, new squares are added and the quilt is displayed at the annual Donor Recognition Ceremony. Each quilt square is made with love and special details such as a photograph, quote, or symbol of their loved one’s life. The quilt is a work in progress, and will continue to be a legacy of the lives lived and lives blessed by the donors.

Honoring Your Loved One in a Remembrance Quilt

You do not need to be exceptionally artistic to contribute! Even the craft-challenged or uncreative person can create a square that will be meaningful and special. Here are some helpful suggestions--give it a try!

  • You can view the quilt (see above) and see what other families have done.
  • You may use any type of fabric, in any color, including sentimental materials such as your loved one's baby blanket, high school jacket, tie, or favorite sweater. Cotton or polyester work best.
  • Your finished square should measure 8" x 8" (or even a little bigger), but do not allow the decorated area to exceed 7” x 7”. This allows for a ½” seam all around the square.
  • Techniques you might use include appliqué, cross stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, sewing, painting, or silk screening. If you plan to iron on a photo, be sure the fabric can be ironed at a high temperature. Cotton works best for this process. Photographs and computer art can be silk-screened onto cotton fabric.
  • Feel free to include the name of your loved one, any significant dates or events, poems, quotations or anything else that helps you express your thoughts.

We recommend you send your quilt square by certified mail, FedEx, or UPS. In the event it does not reach us, a tracking system is helpful.

The quilt is an ongoing project. Squares can be submitted at any time during the year, but they will be sewn on in February/March.

You are welcome to stop by IDS's office to view the quilt. Be sure to call ahead to ensure it is in the office, rather than on display in the community. Call IDS's Family Support Liaison at 1-800-833-6667 or 801-478-7333 for more information.
